| The Girl |
Character: Haruhi Suzumiya Series/Fandom: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Original or Template version: Template Age: 13 but looks closer to 10 Gender: Female Species: Human (next stage of human evolution?) Sexuality: Pansexual, but she’s probably not stable enough to think of that Appearance: Haruhi is a small and skinny girl, almost the definition of a “stick” body type to the point where she nearly looks unhealthy. She has got a very pale complexion from living her life almost entirely indoors, which makes her protuberant amber eyes stand out even more. Haruhi has short brown hair that brushes past her shoulders and is always adorned with an orange ribbon headband which she only takes off while sleeping. Haruhi doesn’t have any type of signature clothing, she usually just wears a white hospital gown and completely lacks any sense of fashion at all. But really, Haruhi doesn’t care that much for clothing anyway and probably run around naked if she could. Haruhi also has a barcode tattooed onto the palm of her right hand which all specimen in the research facility were given for easy identification. It also contains her name in small print under it. Due to the fact that she rarely speaks, she uses this to tell people her name. Personality: If she had grown up normally, Haruhi probably would have been a loud, outspoken girl who chased her dreams. However, due to the constant neglect and harassment she experienced, she has become a withdrawn girl who doesn’t speak to anyone and lives within her own head. She views the world in the way she wants to see it, not how it actually is. Because of this and her isolation, she’s mostly oblivious to rules and customs and sees herself as being above them and so makes no effort to follow them. Haruhi also views the entire world like a big game, since the rare free time she had to play in the laboratory was cherished. She uses her overly active imagination to make any situation into some sort of fantastical adventure, she is especially fond of things involving aliens, time travelers and ESPers. This can sometimes put her into dangerous situations because she does not observe the danger but simply thinks of it as a part of the game where she cannot be harmed. She hates things that are “boring” and usually tries to get out of them or does something to make it more interesting. Haruhi also views people in two different ways, they either dominate her or she dominates them. She submits easily and cowers to those who clearly have a power, usually physical, over her. But if she sees that she is not in any danger with a person, she sees them as more of a plaything than another human being and expects them to do what ever she wants, completely lacking any concept of a mutual relationship. |
| Who She Is |
Abilities/Strengths: Haruhi would be considered by anyone’s standards, a genius. She can easily solve complex calculus equations in her head and reads books far above the level of her age group with ease. She doesn’t actually enjoy doing any of these things, but does them as part of the research she was forced into. Strangely, she is very talented when it comes to music. She is very skilled at the piano and can play a song almost perfectly just by looking at the sheet music once. She can even replay a tune that she hears if she finds it interesting enough to recreate. Music is one of the few things that Haruhi actually finds pleasure in and enjoys fiddling around with different instruments and trying to play them. However, Haruhi has a talent that she is completely unaware of. She has the ability to manipulate her surroundings in order to make them more appealing to her; locked doors suddenly become unlocked, cherry blossoms bloom in winter. She can change physical objects into different things at unconscious will. She also exibits some traits that are more stereotypical of a “psychic” like the ability to lift objects and when she gets angry, things tend to explode. She also has somewhat of a sixth sense, she can sense things about people and their nature without being told. Weaknesses: As said before, Haruhi is completely oblivious to her powers and cannot use them on command. The only happen unconsciously and usually when she is experiencing strong emotions. Her powers are probably not that useful in combat and could probably only exist to save her own life as opposed to killing her attacker. Though there is the danger that her powers could grow much stronger and they would cause great damage because she cannot control them. Also has mentioned before, Haruhi lacks any sort of social skills or abilities to understand other people, in fact; she doesn’t like people all that much. She dislikes speaking and it takes a great effort to get her to speak, and if she does, it is usually a non-sequitur and makes little sense. Haruhi also has a crippling fear of hospitals, labs, and doctors for obvious reasons. When she sees one, she experiences a fear so strong it physically paralyzes her. If forced to see a doctor or enter a hospital, she will kick, scream, and fight with all her might which, despite her size, is actually pretty great. A very big weakness for Haruhi is a stuffed kitten she carries around called “Sammi”. She cannot sleep or be easily calmed without Sammi and will talk to him when she feels nervous or afraid. Sometimes she acts like she believes Sammi is real and others she seems to know he is just a toy. How she acts depends on her mood. |
| Why She Is |
Haruhi was never a normal child by anyone’s standards. By the age of three she was already reading novels and performing complex math, much to the shock of her parents who themselves were only simple business owners in the city of Template. But beyond her so called genius, there were more strange things about Haruhi. When she was around, the world seemed to shift and things went her way. She suddenly found toys that she wanted or broken thing seemed to get fixed and glass seemed to shatter when she got angry. Rumor spread around the school of how strange that Suzumiya girl was and she found herself the target of much bullying and cruelty of her peers and the wariness of her teachers and parents. Haruhi began to figure out that, for some reason, she was different and that was why she was the subject of so much scorn from her classmates. And so she began a search, an obsession, to find people who were even more different than she was. Aliens, time travelers, and ESPers were the object of her desire, and other things that only exist in stories. She began a ritual of searching of searching for them around her elementary school when she could sneak away from the teachers’ watching eyes. She was following the funny lines in the cracked dirt, wondering if maybe they were made by a strange alien device when she ran into a man all dressed in black. The man asked her if her name was “Suzumiya Haruhi” and she asked him if he was someone who investigated aliens. He respond he was and suddenly he was touching her neck. Before she could push him or away or even cry out, there was a sharp pain and the world went black. Somehow, a rogue institution had heard the rumors of this strange little girl and decided to take her, just like they had so many other children. Their purpose was to find children who show exceptional traits and figure out what makes them tick. And then make them “useful”. When Haruhi woke up, she was strapped to a table and there were so many machines hooked up to her. Being only six, she started to cry and ask where she was. A man in a white labcoat explained she was at Novak Research Facility, a place for “special children” and when Haruhi began to cry for her parents, he told her that she would not be seeing them again. For weeks, Haruhi cried and did nothing but cry. The workers at the facility made no effort to console her and the other kidnapped children ignored her. And when she finally stopped crying, the experiments began. It started small at first, forcing her to concentrate on things for a long time, being hypnotized, honing motor skills and brain scans. Then, just as Haruhi was almost getting used to the dull life of a specimen the experiments turned cruel. They began opening her head and sticking needles into it, cutting pieces away. She was shocked with electricity to gage her reactions and monitor her brain waves. They wanted to see what they called “the next stage of human evolution” could take. Soon, Haruhi began to close off, she stopped talking and crying. She followed along quietly, only making soft cries of pain during the experiments. As a result, her tests began producing unwanted results and the scientists saw fit to attempt to boost her morale. They hired a young man named John Smith to look after her. At first Haruhi shied away from him, as she did everyone else. He attempted to engage her with games and toys, but she ignored him. But John never gave up, he diligently stayed by her side, trying to make her come out of her shell. One night he read her a story of a lonely little girl and the alien who became her friend and Haruhi’s curiosity overwhelmed her, “are you an alien?” she asked, speaking for the first time in years. John smiled at her and responded, “no, but I’ll help you look for some”. A bond was instantly formed. Even when the painful experiments resumed, Haruhi stopped retreating into her shell and instead clung to John. And he showered her with gifts and attention, always giving her affectionate pet names. He gave her a headband with ribbons on it, calling her the prettiest girl in world, and she promised him that she would always wear it, so people knew she was the prettiest girl in the world. Haruhi saw John as protector and practically a father, the only person in the world who cared about her and her world revolved around him. He was the one to give her the stuffed animal Sammi that she clings to. Then one night, as John was kissing her goodnight, he whispered something in her ear. He told her that his real name was Kyon and he was from an organization that was trying to rescue children from Novak, and soon she would be rescued. Haruhi, unable able to believe this, was silent. Kyon patted her on the head and promised he would bring her back to her parents, no matter what. Haruhi wasn’t sure she even wanted to go back to her parents, she just wanted to be with Kyon. Suddenly, one night Haruhi was awoken by talking outside her door. She recognized one voice as being Kyon and the other the head scientist of her project. She quietly slipped out of bed and stood next to the door, trying to listen in on the conversation. They seemed to be having an argument. “I know who you are and what you’re doing here,” the scientist said and there was a click. “I have no idea what you are talking about!” Kyon’s voice snapped back, he sounded both angry and afraid. Then, a shot rang out. Haruhi stood in her room, her heart beating wildly, not wanting to think about what happened outside the metal doors. Then blood began seeping through the crack under the door. Haruhi passed out. When she awoke she was sitting on a metal chair in a bright room and across from her sat one of the scientists. He began asking her questions about John Smith, about where he was from and what he knew. Haruhi refused to answer and kept asking where John was. Annoyed at her unwillingness to cooperate, the scientist gripped her by the hair and hissed at her, “he was a miserable traitor, a fool, and a liar, he never cared about you.” A rage came over Haruhi so strong that she no longer knew who she was, and without warning she grabbed his pen off the table and slammed it into his eye. It took five scientists to restrain her all the while she screamed, “I’ll kill him, I’ll kill him!” Haruhi was declared “unusable and potentially dangerous” and spent the next few years of her life either heavily sedated or in chains. She returned to her previous state of untrusting silence and lived without hope. Then rumors started to fly throughout the facility, someone had leaked what they were doing to do the government and they were going to be investigated. Haruhi, being a failed top secret project, was set to be put down like an animal. The last thing she remembered before she awoke in the strange new Template, was a needle being pressed into her neck. |
